Morning Call with You (Coyhaique), December 15, 2025

Long Monday call from inside an Uber on your way to a district asado in the mountains. Big threads: maggots discovered under your shoes that morning; a stolen $30 Uber Eats sushi-roll order; a new investigator Carmen (Coyhaique) who literally found you on the street with a December 28 baptismal date; and a long Hurricane, Utah aside when you realized your zone leader Hermana Patterson is from Hurricane and Patterson's mom (Holly Hinton, maiden name) graduated with me. Family news: Aunt Cathie Faerber died; I was leaving for the funeral after the call.

Maggots

You went to grab your running shoes that morning and found wormy little things underneath. Moved your backpack - more underneath. Started moving everything in the dark corners - more everywhere. You spent two and a half hours buying cleaning supplies and cleaning. Likely source: a pile of old clothes left by previous missionaries (the apartment was used by elders for years before hermanas). A possible compounding factor: Juncker had thrown up in a trash bag you had forgotten to take out for an unknown number of days.

Money update - Uber Eats sushi theft

Juncker's mission card situation is resolved. You got reimbursed, briefly had money. Then ordered Uber Eats sushi hand rolls in Puerto Montt during a leadership meeting; you were juggling the district leader call and the Uber arrival simultaneously. The driver took a picture of the food on a car in front of some house and stole the food. You lost $30. You mostly cared because you had wanted Juncker to experience her first sushi hand roll.

Carmen (Coyhaique) - baptismal date Dec 28

Carmen literally found you and Juncker on the street. She was walking past, asked if you were the missionaries, and you started talking. You gave her a Book of Mormon. After a hard week of trying to meet, you finally connected on a Saturday video call; during the call you put the baptismal date directly - you asked "do you want to get baptized?" and Carmen said "okay, sounds good." Carmen came to church Sunday for the first hour. She knows how to make hand rolls (deep-fried sushi rolls, which she promised to make for the hermanas in a later visit) and accepted a meeting calendar of three times a week before her December 28, 2025 baptism. You dropped two of your four prior fechas this week to focus.

You: "And in my first sector the first person I put a fecha with, her name was Carmen too. So - like mother, like daughter."

Sunday-night dinner that ran past 11

Every Sunday a member of the district presidency (also Relief Society president's husband; they own your apartment) hosts a dinner for the missionaries. Last night the whole district + zone leadership was there and nobody would take you home until past 11. You felt the Spirit leave about an hour before you got out, and ranted about it in your weekly email to Presidente Mackay.

The Hurricane, Utah connection

The thread that pulled half the call. You mentioned in passing that one of your hermanas is from Hurricane, Utah. Me: "What part of Hurricane?" - turned out Hermana Patterson's family lives near Three Falls Elementary. Me: "That's where I went to church." Pursuing the thread further:

Cross-Hurricane family threads also surfaced: our aunt Debbie Morgan (married Miles Morgan; kids Zach, Rachel, Mikey Michael); my grandma's maiden name was Stout ("there's a million Stouts in Hurricane"); Patterson's own paternal grandparents lived right by Lynn's market; Patterson knew Paula's restaurant in St. George.

Aunt Cathie Faerber funeral (same day)

I was leaving for the funeral after the call. Aunt Cathie is Grandma Mavis Heywood's older sister. Her husband died a couple years ago. She had been in assisted living since then with constant migraines and was eventually on heavy painkillers - addicted to opiates by the end. Per me: "It's good that she has finally got to rest."

The mountain asado

Picked up by a member from the other ward; drove ~30 minutes into the mountains to his home; barbecued; ate lakeside. You were uncomfortable being made to sit while the men cooked: "That's not how I was raised. I don't like sitting and watching people work." The host's wife kept dragging individual elders out of the kitchen at random times to tell you, "This is the type of man you need to marry." You said: "We're literally missionaries. We don't care."

Christmas tree star trick

Mom orchestrated a visual: you reached your hand toward the camera; Mom positioned the phone so it looked like you were placing the star on top of the tree. Resulting picture: "really cute."

"Big back," "chopped," "six-seven"

You picked up that Juncker has been saying "chopped" - Spanish "chope" / English slang for ugly/unattractive/ratchet. You felt old. You have also been teaching the local kids the English phrase "big back" - same kids you do "six-seven" with - so they're now calling all their friends "big back."

Brief family drive-by

Mason briefly, Alexa fully on the call near the end. Family Home Evening prayer thread: you were prompted to pray; you delivered a full, thoughtful prayer covering Bryson, Natalie, Mason, Alexa, and Mom and me. Mom closed with: "How does this truth [being a child of God] influence the choices you make?"

Cat saga

Natalie is determined to get a third cat. Has "adopt a cat" on the calendar for tomorrow. The current cats (Gary plus "Nelly's cookie dough" - Natalie's comfort cat) "are dumb and don't love her." Me: "If it's just gonna be a big fight between the cats then I won't feel bad getting rid of them."

Wrap-up - BYU-Idaho

I have done everything that needs to be done: financial aid, housing, application, accepted, transfer credits in, scholarships through. Nothing on your side until classes need to be selected closer to the semester.
