Attached letter (handwritten, transcribed)
Good morning Hermana Heywood! May 1, 2025
I was thinking about you this morning. Well I think about you every day, all the time, but now I'm writing to you. ANYWAYS :), hi! I hope you are having a brilliant morning.
What's going on in the mish? What scripture stuck out to you? This morning I read the scripture about purging all iniquity out of from among us (D&C 43:11). So I decided to study what the difference was between sin, transgression, and iniquity. It was an interesting study.
Spoiler:
(The letter pastes in a printed LDS-doctrinal summary at this point. Transcribed verbatim:)
1. Sin
- Definition: Sin is a broad term that encompasses any action, thought, or behavior that goes against God's commandments. It represents a general state of disobedience to divine law.
- Examples: Lying, stealing, and harboring ill will towards others are all considered sins.
- Consequences: Sin separates individuals from God and can lead to spiritual death. However, through repentance and the Atonement of Jesus Christ, individuals can be forgiven and reconciled with God.
2. Transgression
- Definition: Transgression is often viewed as a specific type of sin that involves knowingly breaking a commandment or law. It implies a level of awareness and choice in the act.
- Examples: Eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden is considered a transgression because it was a direct violation of God's command.
- Consequences: Transgressions can lead to spiritual consequences, but they are often seen as more serious than general sins because they involve a conscious choice to disobey. However, like sins, transgressions can be forgiven through repentance.
3. Iniquity
- Definition: Iniquity refers to a more severe or persistent form of wrongdoing. It often implies a deeper moral corruption or a state of being that is characterized by sinfulness.
- Examples: Engaging in habitual sin or having a hardened heart against God can be considered iniquity.
- Consequences: Iniquity can lead to a greater distance from God and a more profound spiritual decline. It is often associated with a lack of repentance and a refusal to turn back to God.
Contrast
- Scope: Sin is the broadest category, encompassing all forms of disobedience to God. Transgression is a specific type of sin that involves knowledge and intent, while iniquity represents a deeper, more ingrained state of sinfulness.
- Awareness: Transgressions involve a conscious choice to break a commandment, whereas sins can be committed out of ignorance or weakness. Iniquity often reflects a willful rejection of God's laws over time.
- Severity: Iniquity is generally viewed as the most serious of the three, as it indicates a persistent state of rebellion against God. Transgressions are serious but can be seen as more isolated incidents, while sins can vary in severity.
(Jason then resumes in handwriting:)
Kind of interesting, huh? It is comforting for me to know I'm a sinner, not on iniquiter... ha. That sounds wrong. I'm just grateful for Jesus, because he will help me with any of all three.
Uncle Craig was delighted to receive your email this last week. You were inspired in requesting for his address. I don't know what's going on with Aunt Becky but whatever. — This is what Uncle Craig sent to me last Sunday.
(The letter includes a screenshot of an iMessage thread from Craig:)
Craig: Hey Jason! I hope all is well! Just wanted to let you know that I'm thrilled to tears to have gotten Caitlin's missionary email! Please let her know that I'm thankful for her including me and if she can send me anymore in the future I'd be excited to keep up. Sure do love you, Brah!!
Jason: Awesome!! I'll send it! You are officially in the list so expect them every week ❤️🙏👍 love you too
Craig: THANK YOU 🙏😭❤️
Craig: While I've got your attention (though your notifications are silent, sorry) I want to let you know that I've been going to church and meeting with my Bishop and Stake President since last year. I'm on the Path to being rebaptized and have my Priesthood Blessings restored!! It's been over 24 years wandering in the mist of darkness. Hopefully this Rebaptism will happen soon! I'm meeting with my Stake President again today. Please add me on the list in your prayers as well...
(Back to Jason's handwriting:)
Please don't feel bad that he misspelled your name. He's trying and it's really amazing to learn how hard he is trying.
Because you followed a prompting you were a tender mercy in the life of your Uncle. He has struggled tremendously in life and many of his choices have had a profoundly negative impact on his shattered kids and fam. Truly we aren't sent to earth to judge but to love and serve. The older I get and the closer I get to the Savior, the more I see how screwed up I am, and need every ounce of grace and mercy I can get. I'm excited at the prospect of having a brother having the priesthood again.
I always look forward to Monday video talks with you. I can see your growth and the light you emit. It is so cool to see, all that while you are still you — my sweet amazing smart, beautiful and funny daughter. You are the whole package.
Well I'm going to go get ready for work — I just wanted to say hi. I love you and am so very very very proud of you. Keep that chin up and drive forward with faith and you will see miracles.
I Love you,
Dad.
